English Learner (EL) students are those who come from homes where a language other than English is spoken and are acquiring English for their education. Each student is evaluated on his/her English language proficiency. In addition, academic performance is considered to determine eligibility.

The Plymouth-Canton Community School District English Learners Program provides academic and language development support to English Learner (EL) students in the elementary and secondary levels. Approximately 800 students are currently enrolled in the EL program.

Our goals are to provide. . .

  • A welcoming environment for English Learners of all language and cultural backgrounds
  • Students with the skills necessary to acclimate students to the school community
  • Support for content area curriculum

The above link contains a presentation shared at the WIDA (World Class Instructional Design Assessment) Parent Night held Thursday, January 28. 2016. The meeting was held at Discovery Middle School for all EL parents and students. The purpose of the meeting was to share with parents and students the who, what, when, and why of the WIDA assessment and to provide an opportunity for parents to see sample questions and for students to have the opportunity to take the practice test. At the end of the presentation, parents can find the link to see both sample items and practice questions. Parents are free to visit the link. The testing window is seven weeks, beginning February 9 and concluding March 23. Testing schedules are specific to buildings and last a week. Parents can contact their student's school to find out their specific testing period.
